Artist Bio
Hanneke Lourens is a California-based, South African furniture designer who produces her studio collections as well as one-of-a-kind custom work. Her knowledge and skills from years of study at a traditional woodworking school have evolved into a contemporary practice, where she creates sculptural pieces intended for daily use. Working from a renovated cow barn on the Mendocino Coast, she makes each item by hand, always keeping its longevity front of mind.
Previously a fashion designer in London, Hanneke felt drawn to the utility and timelessness of high-quality furniture. Switching mediums and continents, she now designs and makes thoughtful objects for the home. Although she's lived in the US for over a decade, Hanneke still feels very connected to her homeland. She draws endless inspiration from her roots, always weaving the spirit and vibrancy of Africa into her work.
Artwork Description
Adorned with stainless steel bars, the Barred Side Table stands on solid pillar-like legs, giving it a distinct Brutalist feel. The tops of the legs peek out from a circular top, exposing the eye-catching timber end-grain. The inspiration for this piece came from a somewhat unlikely place: security grids bolted to the facades of buildings across her homeland, South Africa.
Linear bars attached to the table’s exterior connect four oversized legs to one another. The brilliant highlights of brushed stainless steel contrast the warm organic tones of the redwood. Sturdy by design, this little table is strong enough to be used as a stool should the occasion arise.
